Burial of Mary Spurstow Miller

Gravestone of Mary Spurstow Miller and her daughter, Ellen Miller
St. Swithun's Churchyard, Cheswardine, Shropshire, England

Mary Spurstow Miller was the daughter of George Spurstow and Elizabeth Hayes of Chester, Cheshire. Christened 1 June 1756 at St. Peter's Church in Chester, the oldest of eight children born to George Spurstow and his two wives. She married William Miller, a mercer and draper of Liverpool, on 21 September 1779 at St. John the Baptist Church in Chester. William and Mary had ten children. After William died in 1826 in Liverpool, Mary eventually went to live with one of her sons, the Rev. Charles H. Miller, in Cheswardine, Shropshire, where Charles was the curate. Mary died in Cheswardine on 30 January 1832 and was buried in the churchyard there. In 1850, Mary's daughter, Ellen, 1784-1850, died in Cheswardine also, and is buried by her mother.

The gravestone reads as follows:

SACRED
TO THE MEMORY OF
MARY RELICT OF WM. MILLER
OF LIVERPOOL
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
JANUARY 30TH 1832, AGED 78
IN HOPE OF A BLESSED IMMORTALITY
THROUGH THE MERITS OF HER
LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST
SHE IS NOT DEAD BUT SLEEPETH
LUKE 8TH VER 52
ALSO OF ELLEN HER DAUGHTER
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE FEBY 28TH 1850 AGED 65.
THESE THREE WORDS WHICH SHE DESIRED TO
HAVE ENGRAVED ON HER TOMB BRIEFLY YET
FULLY DESCRIBE HER SINGLE TRUST IN
AND ENTIRE DEVOTEDNESS TO HER REDEEMER
CHRIST IS ALL. COL 3RD VER 11.

Although Mary's age is given as 78, she would have been about 75 - 76, depending on her date of birth. She was christened on 1 June 1756, so her birth would probably have been not long before that.
