Court Order
Jonathan Whitted bound to Isaac Sugars
1806

Jonathan Whitted, the son of Mary Whitted, was born out of wedlock 2 June 1801. Six months after his birth, Mary married Thomas Pleasants. In February 1806, the Court of Pleas and Quarter Session of Orange County, North Carolina, ordered that "Jonathan Whithed son of Mary Whithed now of the age of 4 years 2d June last be bound to Isaac Sugars [or Shugart] until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mystery of a farmer." So Jonathan went to live with Isaac Sugars. He married Nancy Rogers Clark in 1821 in Orange County. Their first six children were born in Chatham County, North Carolina, just south of Orange County, before moving to Indiana, where they settled in Parke County.
