Colonel William L. Shuttleworth lived the last years of his life in Brooklyn, New York, where he died 27 September 1871, of apoplexy--what we now would call a stroke. He was 59 years old. Both his wives died before him and he left three children--John George, Mary Ella, and David Dobbs. William Louis Shuttleworth was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

This copy of the obituary appeared in the Friday evening edition of the Brooklyn Eagle, 29 September 1871, available at the website Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online, 1841-1902, http://brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle/.
