1861: William is an auctioneer.

1871: Name in census is William, age 67; occupation: auctioneer and appraiser. He was also a widower by this time; Hannah died in 1869.

William Ashcroft, son of Joshua Ashcroft and Esther Harrison, was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, about 24 June 1804. His father died when he was two and his brother just a baby. His wife was Hannah Smith, of Meifod, Wales. They were the parents of seven children: John, Mary, Hannah, Ann, Joshua, William and Esther. William at various times was a shoemaker, excise officer, auctioneer, appraiser and innkeeper. He died 28 November 1878 in Liverpool, Lancashire. Hannah had died in 1869. They are buried together at the Merridale Cemetery in Wolverhampton.
